Amazon continues to expand Prime service in Canada

Published

Amazon Canada is continuing to expand its one-day delivery service across the country. Following the launch of free same-day delivery in Toronto and Vancouver in October, and one-day delivery in Montreal in February, the ecommerce giant announced on Tuesday it is rolling out the service in Calgary and Edmonton.

"We are excited to offer faster, free delivery for Prime members in Calgary and Edmonton," said Mike Strauch, Country Manager for Amazon.ca, in a news statement. "With a wide selection of over half a million items, Prime Free One-Day Delivery will make life easier and more convenient for members shipping to Alberta's two largest cities."

The service is offered to members of the Amazon Prime program; a membership available to all users for $79 a year. Online orders must also be worth 25$ or more to be eligible.

Service in Alberta will be a little slower than other Canadian cities, however. While Toronto and Vancouver can benefit from same-day delivery (similarly to Montreal), Calgary and Edmonton will get one-day delivery. The one-day delivery service allows orders placed before midnight in Montreal and orders placed before 4 pm in Calgary and Edmonton to be delivered the next day by 9 pm. Meanwhile same-day delivery allows orders placed in the morning to be delivered by 9 pm the same day.

The expansion is great news for Canadian Prime subscribers who continue to be underserved by Amazon when compared to offerings in the United States. Canadian customers only started to receive access to Amazon original TV content - The Amazon Prime Video - in late 2016. The service has long been offered to Americans. What's more, American subscribers also have access to free books and magazines, as well as to content on Amazon’s Audible service, which is still not available to Canadian subscribers.

The one-day delivery service is available on more than half a million items, but still not all items are eligible. Items include clothes, accessories as well as household products and more.
