Online retail giant Amazon announced on Monday plans to expand its Vancouver Tech Hub and create an additional 3,000 jobs in fields such as e-commerce technology, cloud computing, and machine learning.

"Vancouver is home to an incredibly talented and diverse workforce, and these thousands of new employees will invent on behalf of our customers worldwide,” explained Alexandre Gagnon, Vice President of Amazon Canada and Mexico, in a news statement.

The plan will see Amazon expand into a new 416,000-square-foot location in The Post – the city’s historic Canada Post building currently being redeveloped by QuadReal Property Group - when the project opens in 2022.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was present on Monday to announce the future new Development Centre.

The tech hub will operate in addition to Amazon's current Vancouver offices, including its 156,000-square-foot location in Telus Garden which opened to Amazon employees in 2015.

Amazon also confirmed last November its plans to expand into another downtown site on Dunsmuir Street, which will open in 2020.

Vancouver placed a bid last year to host Amazon's new headquarters, HQ2, but ultimately did not make the cut. Toronto is the only Canadian city on the list of 20 finalists, with a final location set to be announced sometime this year.

Currently, across Canada, Amazon has created more than 6,000 full-time jobs.
