Amazon announced on Wednesday plans to build its first fulfillment center in New York City. The 855,000-square-foot center will be located in Staten Island and is being developed by Matrix Development Group.

The Seattle-based company expects to create 2,250 full-time jobs with the fulfillment center. In addition, employees at the facility will work alongside robotics to pick, pack and ship customer items. The robotics will also assist customers in fulfilling customer orders.

“We are excited to bring our first fulfillment center to New York and work alongside the state’s incredible workforce,” said Sanjay Shah, Amazon’s Vice President of Customer Fulfillment. “The support of local leaders has been instrumental in our ability to come to New York, and we are grateful for the welcome we’ve received to bring thousands of new jobs with benefits starting on day one.”

According to Staten Island Borough President James S. Oddo, the fulfillment center development will be the “biggest single job creator” in Staten Island history.

Oddo added, “These jobs are being created by the private sector doing what it does best, and our role at Borough Hall has been to help Matrix and Amazon navigate.”

The New York City fulfillment center will be one of the first to open following Amazon’s acquisition of Whole Foods this summer. The company in August slashed food prices at the supermarket chain in an attempt to secure more market share from its rivals.

Amazon also struck a deal with Kohl’s to sell its devices at 10 Kohl’s retail locations in Los Angeles and Chicago beginning in October.
