Atelier New Regime, Marie Saint Pierre among 2018 CAFA nominees

The Canadian Arts and Fashion Awards (CAFA) announced last week the nominees for the 2018 edition of its annual awards show, where new and familiar brands and designers were recognized.

Set to take place on April 20, the fifth annual ceremony is one of Canada’s only awards that recognizes Canadian-based designers and various members of Canada’s fashion industry.
 
Among the nominees for the 2018 event, announced by pop sensation Ralph, Lucian Matis was nominated for a second year for the Womenswear Designer of the Year Award, along with Greta Constantine, Marie Saint Pierre, 
Stephan Caras, and the duo behind Unttld.

Meanwhile, designer Christopher Bates will square off for a third year against first-time nominees Atelier New Regime, Reigning Champ and Dalla for the Menswear Designer of the Year Award.
 
In the accessories category, shoe brand Zvelle will be up against Biko, Cuchara Jewelry, Ela, and Vancouver’s Herschel Supply Co.
 
Among emerging talent in the Canadian landscape; Alynne Lavigne, JY Gao,
 Laurie Fleming,
 Poppy Barley (second-time nominee) and 
Sofia Zakia, were nominated for The Swarovski Award for Emerging Talent in the Accessories category, while Andrew Coimbra, Angelene, 
Markoo,
Wrkdept and Zoff were nominated in the Fashion category.
 
New this year, The Outerwear Designer of the Year Award will recognize a Canadian outerwear designer who has made a lasting impact on the outerwear industry in Canada and abroad. Nominess include Arcteryx, Canada Goose ,
Mackage, and
 Sentaler.
 
Besides designers, other Canadian fashion influencers including models, bloggers, and stylists were nominated in several other CAFA categories, for a total of 17 award categories.
 
Also new, CAFA announced the introduction of The Suzanne Rogers Designer Grant for International Development, a $20,000 grant which will be presented to a Canadian fashion designer or brand that is poised to expand their business internationally.
 
"As a fervent advocate for Canadian fashion, I wanted to help make a difference and support designers with this grant, enabling them to pursue exciting new opportunities, fuel their professional development and amplify their business acumen,” said Rogers. "I am very proud to support CAFA and Canada's richly, diversely talented spectrum of designers as they continue to make an impact nationally and worldwide.”
 
Additionally, CAFA unveiled that international footwear and accessories retailer, The Aldo Group, founded by Canadian businessman, Aldo Bensadoun, will be receiving the 2018 Outstanding Achievement Award.
 
Award winners will be announced at the red carpet gala, taking place on April 20th, 2018, at the Fairmont Royal York in Toronto.
