Filson to enter Canada late April

Following 120 years of business, American Heritage Brand Filson is making its foray into Canada with the inauguration of its first retail location set to open in Vancouver's historic Gastown district on April 28. A second location will also open in Toronto's Queen Street West by early June.

The Seattle-based outdoor outfitter is widely-known to outdoor enthusiasts for its collections of men's and women's outdoor clothing, accessories and luggage made from durable fabrics, with a lifetime guarantee.

"We don't see ourselves as a fashion brand where trends and fashion cycles drive product growth. At Filson, product creation is driven solely by functionality and end-use,” explained Alex Carleton, Filson’s Creative Director, in a news statement.

"The tactile experience is the best way for us to show the quality, craftsmanship and durability that's sewn into every Filson item," added Filson CEO, Steve Bock.

Filson’s Vancouver store will be just over 2,800 square feet and will pay tribute to the brand’s heritage featuring Filson imagery from the late 1800's, iron beams, wooden floors and custom furniture built from local salvaged wood.

Filson isn’t the first American brand to eye the Canadian market. In the last couple of years, Canada has seen a slew of American retailers attempt to take their stake in the market including retail giants like Saks Fifth Avenue and Nordstrom who entered Canada in early 2016 and late 2014 respectively. Most recently, Big and tall apparel retailer DXL made its first foray into Canada with the opening of its first DXL store in Ajax, Ontario, in March.

In Canada, Filson will compete with outdoor retailer Mountain Equipment Co-op (MEC) who also manufacturers its own line of clothing. The retailer currently has over 20 locations across Canada.

Filson doesn’t currently have any plans to open additional locations in Canada this year, but will be opening flagship stores in Plano Texas, Columbus Ohio, and New York, as well as an outlet store north of Seattle, Washington.
