By switching to 100 percent renewable energy, the company has effectively reduced its carbon emissions by 84 percent, reduced water usage by 52 percent, and reduced overall waste per finished product by 43 percent. It also has made significant improvements in package design in furtherance of its sustainability goals.

The additional renewable energy to power L'Oreal USA is coming from solar projects in Arkansas and Kentucky and wind turbines in Texas.

Chairman and CEO Jean-Paul Agon spoke about L'Oreal's efforts to increase sustainability quickly, as well as how it met its goals to reduce carbon emissions 4 years ahead of schedule.

Agon said this accomplishment "sends out a strong signal: we are continuing to dissociate our growth from our environmental impact. While climate change is a major challenge, and we are already seeing its effects on the most vulnerable populations, our commitment is stronger than ever."

Packaging changes also have been made. One example is the company uses 100 percent recycled plastic and 98 percent biodegradable packaging for its Biolage R.A.W. line, exclusively manufactured in Kentucky. Other US manufactured product lines include Garnier and Pureology shampoos and conditioners which now come in 50 percent recycled plastic bottles.

Alexandra Palt, Chief Sustainability Officer for L'Oréal alluded to the fact that L'Oreal will continue pushing ahead to continue improving sustainable practices. She said, "We remain committed to being a sustainability leader here and around the world, and look forward to exceeding our goals in the future."
