London, July 14, 2014 (AFP) - On Monday, Manchester United announced that the club had signed a ten-year contract with Adidas, which will pay a minimum of 750 million pounds, or about 942 million euros.

The "Red Devils" will wear the Adidas logo beginning with the 2015/2016 season, following the conclusion of their contract with Nike, said the English club in a statement. Having outfitted the English club since 2002, Nike hoped to retain its contract with one of the most popular teams in the world, but finally announced last week that it would not renew its partnership as the company were unable to outbid Adidas. Nike’s contract was signed for 13 years and for a total of 303 million pounds (368 million euros).

"Any partnership with a club or a federation has to be mutually beneficial," the American company emphasized last week, and "the terms that were on offer for a renewed contract did not represent good value for Nike’s shareholders."

Manchester United awaits the arrival of the team’s new coach Louis van Gaal, who was the coach for the Netherlands during the World Cup, following a disastrous season that cost David Moyes’ the position. Moyes had succeeded Sir Alex Ferguson. Having finished only 7th in the Premier League last season, the club will not take part in the European competition for the first time since 1989.
