Montreal’s McCord Museum announced on Wednesday that it will inherit Ogilvy’s iconic holiday window display, now that it is seeing an overhaul.

The Canadian luxury retailer, located on Montreal’s Saint-Catherine Street West, will be merging with Holt Renfrew, making way for the inauguration of Holt Renfrew Ogilvy, scheduled for 2020.

Alongside a new name, the new 250,000-square-foot space will be the largest of its kind in Canada. Additional departments are expect to open, prior to its completion in 2020.

The holiday window displays, which are among the last of their kind in North America, have thus been donated by Holt Renfrew Ogilvy in order to protect and preserve the classic display that has endured for over 70 years.

Tailor-made by the German toy company Steiff, the windows have been presented to the public every year since 1947, from mid-November to early January. The animated mechanical windows were designed to resemble two different environments - The Enchanted Village and The Mill in the Forest—where little stuffed animals can be found moving and interacting.

“We are delighted that Holt Renfrew Ogilvy chose the McCord Museum for this important legacy”, said Suzanne Sauvage, President and Chief Executive Officer of the McCord Museum, in a news statement.

“The Ogilvy storefront windows have been part of Montreal history since 1947. They are a source of wonder each year for thousands of Montreal families. We are happy to welcome them at our museum and we will ensure that this tradition lives on to everyone’s delight,” she added.

Holt Renfrew Ogilvy also made a $50,000 donation to the McCord Museum Foundation to help the museum maintain the mechanical windows.
