Outdoor and leisure clothing company Regatta has posted an 18.5% increase in turnover to £139.8 million for the year ended 31 January, boosted by an “excellent trading performance” and the fall in the value of the pound.

According to recently filed accounts, 5.6% of the increase was attributable to the depreciation of sterling.

Regatta trades under two brands, its core outdoor brand Regatta Great Outdoors and the mountain adventure label Dare2b. Regatta Great Outdoors is one of the largest outdoor brands in Europe, and both offer a comprehensive range of summer and winter clothing for men, women and children.

The Manchester-based business said the sales performance was driven by the broad “lifestyle” appeal of the brands, which continues to power growth in markets in the UK and Europe.

A number of infrastructure changes in logistics and its main offices also helped the company be more profitable. Operating profit surged to £14.2 million from £6.4 million in 2016, with profit for the financial year increasing by more than 240% to £10.4 million.

"In prior years, the company had absorbed the cost of a number of infrastructure changes in logistics and its main offices. The results reported here represent the first full year following these changes and, combined with an excellent trading performance, the company delivered a substantial improvement in operating profit," said the directors.

The company was founded in 1981 and has 1,450 employees. The group operates in 55 countries with over 38 UK stores and 42 international stores.
