Phoenix Art Museum opens Yeohlee, Richard Serra fashion and art exhibit

Published

The Phoenix Art Museum this month opened a spring exhibit featuring the work of Chinese-American fashion designer Yeohlee Teng and artist Richard Serra.

Yeohlee/Serra pairs Yeohlee ensembles with Serra’s large-scale oil stick screen prints to showcase the philosophical connections of creatives and an intersection between art and fashion. The black and white ensembles and screen prints share qualities and utilize geometry and proportion and explore form and space.

Yeohlee Teng founded her namesake fashion house, Yeohlee, in 1981, after studying at Parsons School of Design in New York City. The Malaysia-born designer said on her website that she believes that "clothes have magic" and design comes from servicing function. Yeohlee adds the Phoenix Art Museum to the number of museums to exhibit her work, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art and Victoria & Albert in London.

Richard Serra has been making prints since 1971, but he is known more for his large-scale sculptures made of sheet metal. Born in San Francisco and residing in New York City and Nova Scotia, Serra is regarded by the Gagosian as one of the most significant artists of his generation.

His first solo gallery exhibition was held at Galleria La Sallita in Rome in 1966, and his work has been featured in New York City, Spain, Paris, London, Beverly Hills, and the Netherlands among others.

Yeohlee/Serra will be on view at the Ellman Fashion Design Gallery through May 29, 2017.
