As retailers scramble to bring customers in store, Saks Fifth Avenue has raised the bar with a new concept floor in its Brookfield Place downtown NY location, complete with a window-front tattoo shop.

“It’s live theater,” Rivington Tattoo co-owner Wass Stevens told the New York Post, adding that it reminded him of Saks' Midtown Christmas windows.

The window-front tattoo studio is an original and dynamic take on visual merchandising that has been incorporated into Saks' new concept floor, The Downtown Wellery. In addition to the tattoo studio, colorist Joel Warren of The Salon Project has a shop on the concept floor inside Saks' financial district location.

Explaining his decision to join Saks' new project to the Post, Warren stated, “I was looking for unique experiences to drive people into stores to get services and shop."

While brick-and-mortar retail has always had to create innovative strategies to get customers in store and keep them there, some of the more traditional solutions, such as the branded customer lounge and the community space, are now being superseded by more left-field approaches such as Saks' decision to combine tattoos with high-end shopping.

Tracy Margolies, chief merchant for Saks' stores, said the Wellery is the latest incarnation of Saks' desire to connect with consumers and offer original and unexpected in-store experiences.

Other service-based experiences on the Wellery floor include meditation manicures at Sundays Studio and CoolSculpting by Skinney MedSpa.
