Supima announces finalists for 2016 Design Competition

Supima announced on Wednesday the six finalists for its 9th Annual Supima Design Competition. The finalists are competing for a chance to win a $10,000 prize.

 
This year’s finalists come from prestigious US fashion design schools including the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City, the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising in Los Angeles and the Savannah College of Art and Design, where last year’s winner, Kate McKenna, studied.
 
The SDC 2016 finalists include Jiyeon Lee of FIT, Dustin Jasso of FIDM, Kara Michelle Kroeger, a fashion design major from Ohio’s Kent State University, Jacob Blau from the Rhode Island School of Design, and Jacqueline Zeyi Chen from Parsons School of Design, the newest school addition to the competition.

The collections will be presented at New York Fashion Week and judged by an international jury that will be named in the coming weeks. The winner will be named after the show. Supima is also bringing back the successful elements of last year’s competition including the design mentorship of eveningwear designer Bibhu Mohapatra.
 
Last year’s finalists were challenged with producing an eveningwear capsule collection with Supima cotton fabrics. McKenna’s winning collection was inspired by indigo-dyed patterns and incorporated indigo fabrics.
 
Following the runway show competition in New York City, Supima presented the collections in Paris. The company will do the same this year and present the winning collection and finalists’ collections during Paris Fashion Week on September 29.
