Topshop accused of knocking off designs from Wesley Berryman

The New York-based designer grabbed attention with his lace-up designs. Now, social media users have pointed out the similarities between Berryman’s lace-up looks and recent Topshop pieces.

Wesley Berryman debuted his line at New York Fashion Week in September 2016 after graduating from the Savannah College of Art and Design. His designs quickly earned an editorial in Paper magazine and have been worn by the likes of Lady Gaga and FKA Twigs.

Twitter user Liron Eini pointed out that Berryman’s now signature lace-up jacket and pants are remarkably similar to new pieces from Topshop. A pair of black pants with white lacing from Topshop appear similar to a pair designed by Berryman worn by Bella Hadid. Eini also points out a jacket of a similar design to Berryman’s.

Berryman responded to the claims saying his disappointed but not surprised to see a chain like Topshop ripping off other designers, calling such copying widespread in the fashion industry.

Numerous fast fashion retailers have come under fire for allegedly copying designers. Puma sued Forever 21 earlier this year for copying shoes from its collaboration with Rihanna, while PluggedNYC has also recently accused Kylie Jenner of copying the brand’s camouflage bikini for her new clothing line. In 2016, multiple independent artists accused Zara of copying their works.
