Wang, a former figure skater, entered the fashion industry after failing to make the US Olympics team. She explained her decision to quit figure skating in an advice column for The Cut with Jennifer Vineyard, and said that going to school in Paris inspired her to pursue fashion as a career. The designer later joined Vogue, one year after meeting Frances Stein, and then left the publication after 17 years to join Ralph Lauren.

Though she switched careers, she has contributed to the sport by designing costumes for Nancy Kerrigan, who won the silver medal at the 1994 Olympics in one of Wang’s designs, Michelle Kwan and Evan Lysacek.

Chen, the 18-year-old figure skater from Salt Lake City, joins an elite class of skaters that have had the privilege of performing in a Wang-designed costume.

"It is both an honor and a privilege that I will be dressing the 2017 US Men's Figure Skating Champion and Grand Prix winner for the 2018 Olympic season,” said Wang. “Nathan embodies all the values we have come to respect: hard work, dedication, passion and accomplishment! We wish him all the very best."

The 2018 Winter Olympics will be held from February 9 through 25.
