US fast-fashion retailer Forever 21 is shutting its Scottish flagship store in Glasgow, resulting in the loss of around 200 jobs.

According to Scottish media, staff has already been informed of the closure, which is scheduled for mid-May. The company opened the three-level store in March 2013, marking the largest-ever letting on the street.

It currently offers the retailer’s womenswear lines, men’s fashion and its plus size range, as well as the lingerie and footwear collections.

The company did not respond a request for comment, however the property's owner Land Securities confirmed the news and said that the 61,000 sq ft unit be taken by highstreet rival H&M for a new flagship store.

A spokesperson said: “Immediately following the Forever 21 decision to exit we received strong interest in the store on Buchanan Street and subsequently let the unit to H&M as a flagship. H&M will retain the Buchanan Galleries unit which they will rebrand in due course.”

Forever 21 has been downsizing its UK store portfolio since last year, when it closed stores in Manchester and Essex. Further UK locations are expected to shut in the coming months.
