Amazon adding 100,000 seasonal workers ahead of holidays

Amazon has announced its plans to hire 100,000 seasonal workers in the United States and Canada ahead of the holiday season.

The employees will help pick, pack and ship orders as online holiday shopping begins. According to industry reports, some of the largest concentrations of new hires will be located in California, Georgia, Maryland, New Jersey, and Texas.

The 100,000-hire mark is a decrease from last year's number of 200,000 holiday season Amazon hires. However, the e-commerce giant already made a massive round of new hires -- some 175,000 -- in March and April to handle the flood of online orders coming in throughout the Covid-19 pandemic.

In late May, Amazon announced that it would offer about 70%, or 125,000, of the temporary warehouse employees it hired during the pandemic the option to transition to full-time roles.

With the exception of contractors and temporary workers, Amazon employed 876,800 people as of June 30.

Currently, Amazon operates over 110 facilities in North America.
