The news comes just a day after the e-commerce giant announced similar plans in Vancouver, creating an additional 3,000 jobs in the Canadian city.

“In just a few years, we’ve grown from a handful of software developers and scientists to a team of more than 1,200, inventing new capabilities and products on behalf of millions of customers around the world,” said Rohit Prasad, Amazon’s, Vice President and Head Scientist of Amazon Alexa, who is based in the Boston area.

Amazon will expand into 430,000-square-foot space in WS Development’s Seaport project and plans to open the doors of its new office in 2021.

The new facility will allow the company to double its tech workforce in the Boston metropolitan area.

The team in the city primarily works on Alexa, Amazon Web Services, and Audible. In particular, the team enhances the experience of customers interacting with Alexa, leading the industry in its shift toward conversational artificial intelligence.

Since 2011, Amazon has invested over $400 million in Massachusetts and has created more than 3,500 jobs.

Amazon is also expected to announce the location of its new headquarters, HQ2, sometime this year, which Boston is currently in contention for.
