Amazon has teamed up with public health researchers in Seattle, Washington to help deliver and pick up Covid-19 test kits.

Originally reported by CNBC, Amazon Care - the branch of the e-commerce company that provides medical care to its employees - has partnered with the Seattle Coronavirus Assessment Network (SCAN), a group of researchers backed by the Gates Foundation.

As part of the partnership, Amazon Care will help deliver and pick up test kits in Seattle's King County, where there have been over 1,100 confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus and over 80 reported deaths.

The tests will be delivered to people who either feel sick or are asymptomatic, CNBC said, after which Amazon Care will pick them up for analysis. If the virus is detected, the individual will be contacted by a health-care worker.

CNBC previously reported that Amazon said it hopes to process thousands of tests a day.

“Responding to the rapidly evolving Covid-19 crisis must be a community effort and requires support from both the private and public sectors,” Amazon Care director Kristen Helton told CNBC via email.

“We are grateful to be surrounded by a strong community of public health, global health and academic leaders and are eager to leverage Amazon Care’s infrastructure and logistics capabilities to support this local effort.”

The partnership comes as representatives from the World Health Organization continue to emphasize the importance of mass testing to slow the spread of Covid-19.

The testing effort is further supported by Brotman Baty Institute, University of Washington Medicine, Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, and Seattle Children's Hospital, according to CNBC.

Across Washington state, there have been 2,221 confirmed cases of Covid-19 as of this report, a large percentage of which have been located in King County.
