Christian Dior exhibit coming to Montreal

The iconic haute-couture garments of Christian Dior are set to make their debut in Montreal, as part of a major exhibition at the McCord Museum. 

Opening June 11 and running through September 13, 2020, the exhibition will explore the brilliance behind Dior’s dramatic creations, which revived the entire Parisian haute-couture industry after the devastation of the Second World War. 

It will focus on the French designer’s early work, featuring couture pieces from 1947 to 1957, with an insider look of the opening of the new couture house and the revolutionary “New Look” the designer created that swept away the wartime masculine silhouette of women. 

The exhibition will also showcase the creative process of the couturier and the mechanics of the Parisian haute couture industry during the 1950s. 

Produced by the Royal Ontario Museum, it will include items drawn from the Royal Ontario Museum’s extensive collection of Christian Dior couture, and will be complemented by a dozen garments from the McCord Museum’s Dress, Fashion and Textiles collection as well as loans from Dior Héritage, Paris. 

The McCord Museum has been home to a number of fashion exhibitions including one on the haute couture designs of Cristóbal Balenciaga in 2018, which was first organized by the Victoria and Albert Museum in London (V&A).
