Los Angeles-based denim brand Citizens of Humanity has partnered with the Aspen Art Museum for a seven-piece, limited-edition capsule collection dedicated to the late artist Margaret Kilgallen, whose work is now on display at the museum’s 'That’s Where the Beauty Is Retrospective' exhibition.

The collection includes three t-shirts, two tote bags, a jacket and a pair of jeans decorated with both screen-printed and embroidered graphics meant to evoke motifs found in Kilgallen’s artworks. The collection is available for purchase at the Aspen Art Museum store, and online via Citizens of Humanity. Prices range from $165 to $634.

“Margaret Kilgallen has such iconic work and we wanted the collection to pay homage to what she was so renowned for, particularly her lettering and images of trees,” said Citizens of Humanity’s co-design director Laura Mackness.

“We selected these particular artworks as we felt people would feel comfortable wearing them, but also honor her celebrated work.”

Known for her feminist strategies of representation and celebration of the marginalized, Kilgallen and her work were honored in Citizens of Humanity’s editorial publication, Humanity Magazine, in its September 2018 Women’s Issue.

“As great admirers of hers for some time, we were thrilled to have her included in Humanity Magazine,” said Citizens of Humanity’s brand director and Humanity editor-in-chief, Jared Freedman. “All along, we knew we wanted to pay tribute to her work even further.”

The Aspen Art Museum’s presentation marks Kilgallen’s first museum survey, and is the largest presentation of her work to date. The retrospective will remain on view at the museum through June 16 of this year.
