Real estate developer, Edens announced Friday that Free People will open at Atherton Mill in Charlotte this fall. The Atherton Mill store will be the first retail location from the women’s contemporary clothing brand to open in Charlotte.

Free People

Founded in 1984, Free People has been the go-to brand for creative, carefree and individualistic women. The brand gets its name from the store Dick Hayne opened in West Philadelphia in the 1970s, which was renamed to Urban Outfitters. The contemporary brand launched as its own line after successfully operating as Urban Outfitters’ private label. Free People currently operates 75 stores across the US in 30 states and Puerto Rico.

"We have big plans for Atherton Mill and are focused on making sure that Atherton becomes the retail and community gathering place for the South End," says Lyle Darnall, Managing Director for EDENS. "Free People's commitment is a clear step to achieving that and a big win for the South End of Charlotte."

Edens develops, owns and operates community shopping centers across the country. The company has built an institutional-quality portfolio of more than 120 retail centers.
