Berg will succeed William D. Anderson, who is retiring as chairman of the board. He has been serving as chairman of Gildan since February 2012 and as a director since 2006. Anderson is currently seeking re-election to the board however, to support a seamless transition, said the company.

Berg has been serving as a company director since 2015 and has served on all three of the board’s committees during his tenure, including as chairman of the compensation and human resources committee.

He has significant public company board experience having served on the board of directors of Meredith Corporation, a publicly-held media and marketing company, where he is also chair of the audit and finance committee. He was also recently appointed to the board of premium spirits company, Beam Suntory International.

The Montreal-based apparel manufacturer saw a 5.7 percent increase in full-year net sales, driven by a jump in its international business, with net sales totalling $2.9 billion in 2018.

The owner of American Apparel since 2017, Gildan expanded American Apparel's presence online during the year when it launched its e-commerce business last spring.

Other company-owned brands include Comfort Colors, Secret, Silks, Kushyfoot, and more, with a product line ranging from activewear, underwear, and socks, to hosiery and legwear.
