Hedi Slimane reimagines his classic woman for Celine

After choosing the Castellet motorsports race track in Var, France as the location to showcase Celine’s menswear collection in summer, Slimane selected the monumental Louis II stadium in Monaco to stage his women’s ready-to-wear show for spring on Monday.

Slimane continues to be inspired by the US. The country’s streetwear, high schools, and skate parks, which inspired his menswear showcase in July, gave way this time to college campuses to redefine the Celine woman in a younger, more causal manor, with a nineties spirit.

The new woman envisioned by Hedi Slimane for LVMH brand Celine - Celine

With a cap perched on her head, the new Celine woman favours sweaters, mini-knitwear with nautical stripes, crop tops, and even bras, which she wears under small jackets or camouflage outers paired with running shorts in luxury leather or faded jeans with holes in. Teddies and windbreakers added to the look of the rebellious student, as did denim vests slipped on over hoodies.

Shoes were strictly flat. What could be more apt for this show of athleticism to the lively beat of ‘I like him,’ by New York-based rapper Princess Nokia? Sports shoes, in Pataugas-style lace-up canvas, boots, and even practical style sandals worn with socks featured. There was something for every taste. Another notable feature was Breton style fisherman’s rubber boots, the ankle length version of which should prove the most popular.

It was the footwear that really gave a new twist to Celine’s classically bourgeois style, which Slimane continued to offer multiple versions of in this collection. Mohair cardigans with golden buttons were worn over mid-length, buttoned up summer dresses in polka dots and thin stripes, some ruffled. For the evening, these same dresses were adorned with rhinestones, sparkling in their lightness. Tweed and Prince of Wales jackets also featured in the collection along with pussy-bow blouses and straight-cut leather skirts.

Slimane played with mixing the opposite aesthetics of classic and sporty and chic and grunge. Sometimes this was just shown in the collection’s detailing such as a luxurious bag with gold chain shoulder strap paired with a denim jacket.
