Jean Paul Gaultier appoints Antoine Gagey as general manager

After Jean Paul Gaultier bid adieu to the Paris Haute Couture Week, with a memorable show at the Châtelet theatre last week, changes were to be expected at the Parisian label. There were several question marks about Jean Paul Gaultier’s future, after what could be regarded as a stepping back by its eponymous founder. The wait hasn’t been long, and FashionNetwork.com has now learned that the label has made a change at the top, hiring Antoine Gagey as its new general manager.

Gagey has formerly worked with the Boston Consulting Group, and is known in the fashion world for having co-founded womenswear label Coralie Marabelle, with the eponymous designer, in 2016. Gagey succeeds Sophie Waintraub, who joined Jean Paul Gaultier in 2005 and took charge of the label in 2014. Last July, Waintraub left Jean Paul Gaultier to join Chanel, where she took charge of feather artisan Maison Lemarié and pleating specialist Lognon, two of the crafts specialists managed by the luxury group’s subsidiary Paraffection, succeeding Nadine Dufat.

Gagey’s appointment was confirmed to FashionNetwork.com by Jean Paul Gaultier. The label’s future strategy is yet to be revealed. Meanwhile, Jean Paul Gaultier, 67, is still very much a presence in the company, despite his decision to stop being involved with haute couture. “New projects are on the cards. The couture business will not stop. It will be taken over by one or more designers,” FashionNetwork.com was told by the French label, owned by Spanish group Puig.
