La Maison Simons acquires Rituels

La Maison Simons has made its first strategic acquisition since its inception 178 years ago.

The Quebec City-based fashion retailer announced on Friday that it has acquired Rituels, a fellow Quebec City-based company that specialises in traditional shaving and grooming products and accessories for men.

The acquisition will see Rituels line of shampoos, soaps, shave oils and shaving creams phased into Simons stores and online.

"Rituels pays the same attention to detail as we do when choosing products and strives to build long-term relationships with its customers, by providing an unparalleled shopping experience. Our companies target similar market segments, but from two different but perfectly complementary angles. It is therefore a natural association and one I'm really pleased to be entering into today," said Peter Simons, CEO of La Maison Simons, in a news statement.

"It is an honour to be part of such a well-known and valued name as Simons. This partnership will provide the Rituels brand with access to a new and previously inaccessible customer base and enable it to grow more rapidly than ever before. There is such great potential," added the founding president of Rituels.ca, Michael Carpentier.

The partnership was struck when Carpentier wrote a blog post last January suggesting that Simons integrate growing e-retailers into its digital development strategy. From there, the two businessmen got together and started their journey.

Carpentier will continue to manage the brand as a member of the Simons team. Meanwhile, Rituels.ca and Rituels store, located in Quebec City's Petit Champlain quarter, will also continue to operate.

"Michael will use his leadership and e-commerce expertise at Simons, specifically for converting our former distribution centre into an accelerator for creators and small and medium-sized businesses. I have total confidence in him," said Peter.

La Maison Simons has been going through a period of growth and change in recent years. In 2012, the retailer expanded outside of Quebec for the first time and now has 15 large-format stores across Canada including in British Columbia, Alberta, Quebec and Ontario.

The company also recently accepted its first outside investment to help fund a new distribution centre that is integral to its growth strategy.

La Maison Simons was founded in 1840 by John Simons. The two Simons brothers Peter and Richard are currentky at the helm of the family business. The company offers a range of fashion brands, exclusive private labels and international designer labels for both men and women.

It also offers home fashion products for the bedroom, bathroom and kitchen, and recently launched footwear.
