MMFA presents Quebec leatherwork in new exhibit

Published
May 10, 2017

The Montreal Museum of Fine Arts (MMFA) is highlighting the creativity and craftsmanship of contemporary leather creators in a new exhibition.

Named “New Takes on an Old Craft: Contemporary Quebec Leatherwork”, the exhibition features some 50 objects and fashion accessories from predominantly Quebec creators, and emphasizes the craftwork and appeal of leather.

Items on display include shoes, jewelry boxes, handbags and more from the likes of Vancouver-based shoe brand John Fluevog, Quebec accessories designer Pascale Falardeau, and artist shoe maker Anastasia Radevich, to name a few.

“This exhibition puts the spotlight on our leather artisans. It is the opportunity to bring local world- class talent to light and provide a different perspective on everyday objects,” said Claire Kusy, general director of the Centre des métiers du cuir de Montréal, in a news statement. “These pieces transport us to the world of the workshop, into the imaginary and singularity. Each one is unique. It demonstrates talent and tells its own story.”

The exhibition is presented in collaboration with the Centre des métiers du cuir de Montréal and is exhibited in the Design Lab at the MMFA. It is curated by Diane Charbonneau, Curator of Modern and Contemporary Decorative Arts at the MMFA. It opened last month and will run until March 2018.
