The city of Montreal is focusing on local designers with the launch of its first Buy Montreal Design Day, taking place May 6.

"In this, Montréal's 375th anniversary year, we want to bring our creative professionals closer to their fellow citizens and boost the visibility and accessibility of Montreal designers' creations in their own city," explained Manon Gauthier, the city’s Executive Committee Member responsible for Culture, Heritage, Design, Space for Life and the Status of Women.

Organized by Montreal’s Bureau du Design, the initiative will include pieces from its catalogue of "so Montréal" souvenir items called Code Souvenir Montreal, initially launched in 2010. On May 6, items will be available at the SIDIM-Salon du Design, a design marketplace, as well as at five other points of sale in Montreal, and on Facebook.

Now in its fourth edition, the Code Souvenir Montreal catalogue, features items ranging from office and home accessories to food items and fashion creations. Among the fashion items, silk scarves from Claire Papillon will be available, as well as accessories from Designlump, recycled fur creations such as tuques and scarves by Harricana par Mariouche and leather card holders by Matu.

Recognized as a UNESCO City of Design in 2006, Montreal is one of the most prevalent Canadian cities at promoting and showcasing its local design talent. Earlier this year, the city gave $50,000 to support two important fashion initiatives in the city. All year round, Montreal's Bureau du Design is dedicated to developing the market for, and promoting the talents of Montreal-based designers and architects.
