Museum of the City of New York opens ‘Dressing Room’ exhibit

Published

The Museum of the City of New York on Monday opened its newest fashion exhibit, Dressing Room: Archiving Fashion. The exhibit will remain open through March 25.

Dressing Room: Archiving Fashion opened Monday, January 25 and will remain through March 25 - The Museum of the City of New York

Dressing Room features trendsetting outfits like evening gowns and jumpsuits from the 1940s to the 1960s that were worn by notable New York women and created by celebrated designers. The museum staff dress and photograph the models live in a pop-up studio at the museum’s first floor.

A number of noteworthy ensembles that the museum will photograph at the exhibit include the “Rosie the Riveter” jumpsuit commissioned by Sperry Gyroscope in 1942 and designed by Vera Maxwell; Ruby Bailey’s “Bugs” cocktail dress and a Halston mink-trimmed evening gown and mask worn by Candice Bergen to Truman Capote’s 1966 Black and White Ball at the Plaza Hotel. Photos will be uploaded to the Museum’s online Collections Portal for browsing and will be part of its Mod New York: Fashion Takes a Trip exhibit opening in early 2017.

Dressing Room: Archiving Fashion is open Monday through Friday from 10am to 12:30pm and from 1:30pm to 3:30pm.
