The New York City Economic Development Corporation announced on Thursday that TechShop, the world’s largest operator of open-access marketplaces, has been selected to operate a manufacturing center at Brooklyn’s Army Terminal in Sunset Park.

The 15,000-square-foot manufacturing center will provide makers and other small manufacturing firms with affordable access to 21st century equipment. The Brooklyn center is also expected to create over 500 jobs in the first 5 years, attract $200 million in investment and help launch more than 200 new industrial businesses.

TechShop, which will operate the manufacturing center, helped launch hundreds of businesses since it was founded in 2006. The San Jose-based company is a membership-based, do-it-yourself workshop and fabrication studio with locations in San Jose, Redwood City, San Francisco, Phoenix, Detroit, St. Louis, Pittsburgh, Austin, Washington DC, Paris, Abu Dhabi and Tokyo.

“We are experiencing a manufacturing renaissance in New York City that is driven by the talents of our creative entrepreneurs, makers, and inventors,” said NYCEDC President Maria Torres-Springer. “Our new partnership with Tech Shop will democratize access to the state of the art tools, equipment, and workspaces necessary to not just support our city's manufacturers but also position New York City at the forefront of advancing manufacturing.”

The manufacturing center is part of Futureworks NYC, a network of programs and resources created in November 2015 to support New York City businesses. Mayor de Blasio and Speaker Mark-Viverito created Futureworks NYC to grow industrial and manufacturing jobs and to ensure that businesses and firms have a space to expand. In addition to the new center, Futureworks NYC also includes a Virtual Incubator for product start-up launches, Business Extension Services, Existing Space Activation, Futureworks Growth Initiatives, Advisory Body and the Futureworks.nyc website.
