The British Fashion Council made the announcement on Monday evening as it prepared to release tickets for the event on 26 June.

The 49-year old Londoner, who became the first black model to be on the cover of British Vogue, also scooped the Fashion Icon Award at the CFDA Fashion Awards in the US last year.

Known the world over as one of the original supermodels, Naomi Campbell has graced the covers of over 500 magazines worldwide, and starred in iconic campaigns for luxury labels including Burberry, Chanel, Louis Vuitton, Balmain and Versace.

But she has also used her fame as a platform to help those in need. In 1993 she began doing charity work with Nelson Mandela and in 2005 she launched Fashion for Relief, a fundraiser which has raised millions in aid of disaster relief such as the Japanese earthquake and tsunami, the Haiti earthquake, Hurricane Katrina and child refugee crises.

This week she announced that Fashion for Relief will return to London this year with a catwalk show during London Fashion Week in September.

Caroline Rush, BFC chief executive, commented: “We cannot think of a more deserving recipient than iconic Londoner Naomi Campbell, she has achieved exceptional work in the industry. Naomi represents female empowerment, activism and glamour and her voice is used for great impact.”

The British model, actress and businesswoman will receive the Fashion Icon Award at the upcoming Fashion Awards, taking place on Monday 2 December at the Royal Albert Hall in London.

The event is the BFC’s main fundraiser for its designer support initiatives and programmes. Last year, the British Fashion Council raised over £2.3 million for its charities and initiatives.
