The retailer opened its Dulles Town Center store in September 2002. The store is one of six full-line stores in the greater DC area, along with stores at Tysons Corner Center, Montgomery Mall, Fashion Centre at Pentagon City, Annapolis Mall and The Mall in Columbia. Nordstrom also operates 12 Rack stores in the area at Dulles Town Crossing, Fair Lakes Promenade, Tysons Corner, Gaithersburg, Friendship Center, Springfield Town Center, Pentagon Centre, Downtown D.C., 12th Street, Potomac Mills, Columbia Crossing and Annapolis Harbour Center.

The Dulles Town Center store will remain open through September 8, 2017, and its closing will impact 150 non-seasonal employees.

"Our strategy is focused on our customers. When it comes to store investments we feel it makes the most sense to look at the total market area versus individual stores. In looking at the greater D.C. market, we feel we can serve our customers better at our other area stores and online," said Jamie Nordstrom, President of stores for Nordstrom. "We've been fortunate to build great relationships with our customers and employees at our Dulles Town Center store for the past 15 years however, our operating agreement is set to expire and closing this store is the best decision for us."

The move to close the Dulles Town Center store could be part of Nordstrom’s plans to go private. Members of the Nordstrom family formed a group to explore going private. Prior to the exploration, Nordstrom posted an increase in net sales for its Rack business, but a decrease for its Nordstrom brand.

Nordstrom added that the company, since 1990, has opened 298 stores and closed 17 stores. The company also plans to open three full-line stores and 12 Rack locations this fall, including a Rack store at Woodmore Towne Center in Glenarden, Md.
