Longtime New York City retail fixture Pearl River Mart closed its sole location in Chinatown in 2015 after 44 years in business. This month, the retailer made its return with a new location at 395 Broadway in Tribeca.

Pearl River Mart previously operated a 30,000-square-foot, three-level store on 477 Broadway, and it closed the location due to rising rent costs and increased online competition. The new Pearl River Mart location is a pop up store that is currently under construction and will become a permanent store in May 2017. The retailer also took part in this year’s Small Business Saturday and will honor its deals through Cyber Monday.

Owners Ming Yi Chen and Ching Yeh Chen took to social media to chronicle the new store opening and to thank all of its loyal customers for their support while opening the new store. Pearl River Mart originally opened in 1971, but it relocated several times before opening on 477 Broadway in 2003.

Many friends of Pearl River Mart took part in the new store opening including U.S. Congresswoman Grace Meng; Debora Spar, the President of Barnard College and incoming President of Lincoln Center; Opening Ceremony and KENZO's Humberto Leon; New York Supreme Court Justice Doris Ling-Cohan and NBC News 4 Reporter Pei-Sze Cheng.

To celebrate the opening, Pearl River Mart took part in CTRL-ALT, a pop up exhibit by the Smithsonian Asian Pacific American Center featuring 40 traditional and experimental artists in the first Pearl River Mart location. In addition, the new store features art from Chris Mendoza, the inaugural artist-in-residence.
