Perry Ellis International announced recently that it has entered into a licensing agreement with BMI Wholesale Trading Private Limited for the right to sell Original Penguin by Munsingwear in India.

BMI has been responsible for the launch and development of Tommy Hilfiger, French Connection, Calvin Klein Jeans and Calvin Klein Underwear in India. The company opened over 350 points of sales across 32 cities in the country in the course of 6 years. And BMI will be assisting Perry Ellis in the launch of Original Penguin in India.

"We are delighted with the potential this collaboration with a true leader in the Indian apparel industry offers in bringing Original Penguin to India. Perry Ellis International expansion is a key strategic initiative and entering this important market with an experienced operating partner like BMI is an important step in furthering our global ambitions," commented George Feldenkreis, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer.

Original Penguin is one of many brands under the Perry Ellis umbrella including the Perry Ellis namesake brand, Jantzen, Rafaella, Cubavera, Ben Hogan, Manhattan, Axist, Farah, and licensing trademarks from third parties, Nike and Jag for swimwear, and Callaway, PGA Tour and Jack Nicklaus for golf apparel.

Perry Ellis is the most recent company to announce that it has set its sights on India. Recently, Gap opened a retail location in the populous country, and H&M announced it will open a store in New Delhi this fall. All three companies are following in the footsteps of Zara, which opened a store in India in 2010.
