Prabal Gurung opens first ever flagship store

The US-based Nepali designer Prabul Gurung has opened his first ever flagship store at 367 Bleecker Street in New York’s West Village.

Prabul Gurung has opened his first ever flagship store at 367 Bleecker Street in New York - Prabul Gurung

The opening is part of the “Love, Bleecker” project that aims to rejuvenate the former fashion hub and encourage a new wave of designers to flock to the area. Prabal Gurung is the project's first creative director.

The store has a rustic wooden floor and modern style rails and shelves for Gurung’s designs. The front window features a light installation by Edward Ross that was designed to resemble sunrise and sunset in Gurung’s native Nepal and the overall feel is indeed a mix of Gurung’s Nepali heritage and New York design.

“I’ve always dreamed about having my own store, and I wanted to bring my roots and my heritage,” Gurung told Vogue. “Women will come in and see these glamorous sequin dresses next to slogan T-shirts and cashmere shawls from Nepal, where our knitwear is made mostly by women. The brand is deeply rooted in what it means to make clothes, so I want people to figure all of that out.” A percentage of sales from the store will benefit the Shikshya Foundation in Nepal which Gurung himself founded in 2011.

The “Love, Bleecker” project was started earlier in the year by Brookfield which acquired the street’s empty shops. Skylight subsequently came on board to curate the array of stores for the street and chose to seek out brands that did not yet have a flagship store. Several events are planned for the area over the coming months.
