Sophia Amoruso’s new venture Girlboss announced on Wednesday that it has raised $2 million in funding in a round led by Lightspeed Venture Partners and including Atom Factory among other investors. The new funding, which completes Girlboss’ seed funding round, increases the venture's total amount raised to $3.1 million.

“Sophia and the Girlboss team have done a tremendous job creating a brand centered around empowering women,” said Lightspeed Venture Partners Investing Partner Nicole Quinn, who joins the Girlboss board with the investment.

“This is a mission that has resonated with a fast-growing audience of young women. Sophia’s influence and steadfastness paired with Girlboss’ remarkable growth and ability to authentically reach their audience makes them well-positioned in this new generation of content companies.”

Girlboss, Amoruso's new venture since Nasty Gal's acquisition by UK-based Boohoo.com, is a mission-driven company that offers women the tools they need to achieve, advance and own their power. The women’s empowerment brand, which shares its name with Amoruso’s New York Times best-selling biography #GirlBoss, operates a website, a podcast named Girlboss Radio, and Girlboss Rallies. The company also has a foundation, The Girlboss Foundation, which has awarded $130,000 in biannual grants since 2014.

The new investment will be used to expand digital offerings and support talent acquisition.

“Girlboss is a global brand and a household name, yet still very much a startup. I am thrilled to find partners like Nicole and Lightspeed who believe in our vision and whose enthusiasm equals ours for the community and conversation we’re building,” said Amoruso.

This year, Girlboss hired former Goop CRO and Refinery29 EVP of Brand Partnerships Alison Wyatt as President and CRO, and former Refinery29 SVP of Content Strategy and Innovation Neha Gandhi as COO and Editor-in-Chief. Katie Gowdy Pridham, formerly of Elle.com, New York Magazine and Refinery29, was also recently hired as Head of Brand Partnerships.

“It’s been incredible to see so many brilliant, ambitious and creative young women respond to Girlboss in the short time since we launched, and we look forward to providing them with even greater digital offerings and storytelling capabilities,” added Amoruso. “With this funding, we’ll also continue to build a talented team that is as passionate about redefining success for and with a new generation of women.”
