The 23rd edition of the Tokyo Fashion Week, to be held next October, will be called the Amazon Fashion Week Tokyo. The US giant has joined forces with the Japan Fashion Week Organization (JFWO) as part of the strategy focusing on its fashion range.

"Our objective is to offer Amazon customers the fashion brands they want," stated the Vice-President of Amazon Fashion, James Peters. "Part of our promise of a fine product selection relies on our engagement with the fashion industry, as we foster young designers, notably by giving them the opportunity to benefit from our marketplace. By sponsoring the Tokyo Fashion Week, we wish to work with the JFWO to help Japanese designers showcase their collections. "

The Tokyo Fashion Week was launched 12 years ago. Each edition attracts about 50,000 industry professionals, celebrities, fashion aficionados and the plain curious. The event is held at an iconic venue, the Shibuya Hikarie tower, overlooking the famous Shibuya intersection, in the Tokyo district which is among those most frequently associated with emerging trends. From the next edition, the fashion week will be staged also at the Omotesando Hills. It is a venue located in the more northern neighbourhood of Harajuku, also a renowned fashion destination for Japanese youngsters.

Though the US distribution giant dos not provide detailed figures, it regularly indicates that fashion, one of its leading categories, is one of the group's priorities. In 2015, Amazon generated sales for $107 billion (€93.9 billion), equivalent to a 20% rise, and a 26% one at constant exchange rates. Net income rose to $596 million, compared to a $214 million loss in 2014. Amazon is notably also the sponsor of the New York menswear fashion week, as well as of the Amazon Fashion Week India.
