The United States Senate has passed the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement, or the USMCA, on Thursday.

The agreement, which passed with an 89 to 10 vote and will replace the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), will now be sent to President Donald Trump and is expected to be signed next week. It was approved by the House in December.

The pass comes just a day after President Trump signed a major trade deal with China, which stipulates that China will buy hundreds of billions of dollars worth of U.S. goods over the next two years.

The USMCA establishes refreshed trade policies between the three North American countries since NAFTA was enforced in 1994, with new rules regarding intellectual property and data, digital trade, labor and environmental protections, among others.

“The world has changed dramatically since the United States, Canada and Mexico first agreed to tear down barriers to free trade a quarter-century ago,” said Matthew Shay, president of the National Retail Federation, who praised the agreement, which looks to bolster U.S. jobs and keep consumer goods pricing affordable.

“This updated agreement will modernize trade among our closest trading partners and pave the way for continued prosperity across the borders of North America as the global economy continues to evolve. This agreement will support the millions of U.S. jobs that depend on free trade with Canada and Mexico and will ensure the continued availability of affordable everyday necessities for American families.”

The deal’s approval came just ahead of President Trump’s impeachment trial, which opened today.
